When am I eligible for social assistance?

The short answer

You are entitled to social assistance if you are 18 years of age or older, legally reside in the Netherlands, and do not have enough money to live on. You must not have assets above the social assistance norm (approximately €6,600 for single persons). You must also be available for work and have exhausted all possibilities to generate income. Social assistance is always the last resort after other benefits and income have been investigated.

What does the law say?

The Participation Act regulates when you are entitled to social assistance. This law stipulates that municipalities must provide social assistance to people who cannot provide for their living expenses. You must demonstrate that you really have no other options. The law also requires you to cooperate in finding work or pursuing an education.

What do you need to watch out for?

Pay close attention to the asset limit, as savings and possessions also count. If you cohabit or are married, the income and assets of your partner are also included. You must honestly report all income, including side jobs or undeclared earnings. The municipality can conduct strict checks, and in case of fraud, you will have to repay everything.

Example from practice

Marloes (28) loses her job and after three months no longer has the right to unemployment benefits because she has worked too little. She has €3,000 in savings and rents a studio for €650 per month. Since her savings are below the asset limit and she has no other income, she can apply for social assistance. However, the municipality expects her to actively apply for jobs and participate in reintegration programs. She will receive approximately €1,070 per month in social assistance because she is single.
