Can I send my child to another school?

The short answer

In the Netherlands, the principle of free school choice applies, which means that parents can decide for themselves which school their child will attend. You can always switch your child to a different school, regardless of the reason. However, the new school must have a place available for your child. If there is no space, you can still register your child on the waiting list. Some schools have admission criteria, especially in secondary education.

What does the law say?

The Compulsory Education Act and the Primary Education Act regulate free school choice in the Netherlands. Parents have the right to choose between public education, special education based on religious beliefs, or special education based on other philosophical beliefs.
